One Potential of Sleep Paralysis
Pixies:
I got past the terror of the ego thinking it was dying but I wasn't successful at the astral projection/OBE.
Roo:
Well, yes, I've OBE'd once but that was from a waking state, and yes it felt like I was getting sucked backwards into myself, though it happened so fast I didn't have time to be scared. I make a distinction between OBE'ing and Astral Projecting. OBE's occur on the etheric plane (which is the closest plane to the physical), which is of a similar structure to the physical plane, and the OBE'er still has a sense of their body. Astral Projecting occurs on the next plane up, the astral or emotional plane, which is more dream or fluid-like, and the astral projector doesn't have such a solid sense of their body. I think that lucid dreaming and astral projecting are different but somewhat related, and you could probably move between the two (?). An OBE, though, is definitely distinct from lucid dreaming. I think that because SP is tied so closely to REM sleep that transferring into a lucid dream would be the most common path. But, being in that sort of limbo state, between wakefulness and REM, astral projecting would also be possible. Judging from my experience, I don't think an OBE (in the way I just defined it) would be possible from SP. OBE'ing involves loosening your etheric body from the your physical body (and yes your physical should become "paralyzed" but it is not defined as SP as far as I know) and sort of popping out of your regular confines. During SP only your mind is awake (and connected to the REM stage) and so this movement isn't possible.
I've learnt to pull myself to wakefulness during SP which is what I mostly do now instead of exploring the state. I mean, for me, still scared of the state, I heard things running at my door and banging on it, the room suddenly filling up with beings, etc, so its pretty intense. I hope one day I can let go and realize that there is nothing to fear, and then the hallucinations can become enjoyable (and I can move into lucid dreams!). I never feel like my ego is dying though (in OBE well yeah kind of), I feel like I am under attack, and because I can't move I feel extremely vulnerable. Are you experiencing SP (where you wake from sleep paralyzed) or the early stages of an OBE (which you would get to after lying still for ages until your body is very relaxed / paralyzed - also possible after you wake from sleep but don't move)? I suppose that what makes SP distinct from anything else is its hallucinogenic quality - you should actually see things appear in your field of vision. If would be helpful if you could define your terms to clarify your experience.

The body does not wake up, the body is still "locked down" as it is when dreaming in order to stop the dreamer acting out his dreams. The mind wakes up. During REM your eyes still move and this is why you can still use them when your mind awakes.
Pixies:
I've got to the vibrational stage plenty of times, but have never been able to project. But at least I learned about the essence of my ego.
Roo:
Honestly Pixies I don't know how many chances I can give you. Seriously its obvious you're trolling on the other thread but I thought another topic may be different. I asked you to define your terms but you didn't. Just another vague, self-centered, and assuming one line of text from the old "poor me" nihilist.
