It's hard to contemplate what these Egyptians were trying to achieve. The scooping out of the brains, while preserving the body. Unless there's something in the brain, perhaps the Pineal Gland, that can call the soul back into the body, and by removing that, the soul can wander through the universe for as long as the body is preserved, without incarnating into another body.
